Lines on the sidelines for Vale

Chris Lines is suspended for Port Vale's home game against Notts County.

Lines received his fifth yellow card of the season during the 3-0 defeat at MK Dons on Saturday and the midfielder will serve a one-match ban on Boxing Day.

Carl Dickinson started in central midfield in Milton Keynes but is likely to line-up in his usual slot at left-back against the Magpies. Dan Jones had come back into the side at left-back at the weekend, but then limped off after 30 minutes with a foot injury.

Jones, only recently back in the team following groin and foot problems, is a doubt while manager Micky Adams is also waiting on the fitness of Adam Yates (back) and Rob Taylor (thigh) after they missed the Dons defeat. Captain Doug Loft is close to a comeback after making good progress in his recovery from a calf injury.

Gary Liddle will miss out for the visitors.

Liddle may not play again until 2014 after sustaining an ankle injury during the 1-1 home draw with Bristol City. The 27-year-old left Meadow Lane on Saturday evening wearing a protective boot after being hurt in a challenge with Robins defender Greg Cunningham.

Magpies manager Shaun Derry fears the player may have damaged ligaments but is awaiting the results of scans to determine the extent of the problem, although the club are optimistic there is no broken bone.

Callum Ball was another injury concern at the weekend after he was taken to hospital as a precautionary measure following a clash of heads with a visiting defender, but Derry is hopeful the on-loan Derby striker will be fit.
