Struggling Brentford finally gave their fans something to smile about when they ended an 11 game winless streak by beating Port Vale 3-2.

Goals from Jay Tabb, Steve Hunt and Tony Rougier gave Brentford their first win since November 15.

Despite damp conditions, Tabb sparked the game into life early on as he scored after just 80 seconds when his telling shot, from a central position on the edge of the area, rocketed past Vale goalkeeper Jonny Brain.

Tight marking by Brentford’s defence seemed to be frustrating Port Vale's attempts to get back into the game until Billy Paynter picked out the run of Stephen McPhee as he slipped past Ronnie Bull on the right and his powerful low shot flew past Alan Julian.

Brentford began the second half as brightly as they did the first with Hunt grabbing a goal after three minutes of the restart as he finished a purposeful run with a low shot past Brain.

Port Vale manager Brian Horton questioned his team’s motivation during the week and he may be asking similar questions this week as his team lacked the same desire as their opponents.

Rougier grabbed Brentford's third on 56 minutes when he was allowed time and space on the edge of the area and the tricky winger smashed the ball into the roof of the net.

McPhee almost managed an instant reply when he shot early after slipping through the defence, but the ball was well saved by Julian and Steve Brooker headed the rebound wide.

The tireless McPhee ran through 10 minutes later but this time was denied by Julian's outstretched feet.

McPhee, who was easily Vale's best player, then grabbed a well deserved second goal when Julian failed to catch a corner and the striker was presented with an empty net.
