Times are hard at Vale Park at the moment with the club in administration and poor league form dropping them into the relegation zone.

Blackpool looked dangerous in the opening stages and nearly took the lead in the 13th minute when Martin Bullock embarked on an individual run, weaving in and out of the Vale defence.

However, his eight-yard shot was saved by the outstretched leg of Dean Delaney and put out for a corner.

The Seasiders looked a different class and went close again in the 32nd minute when Bullock played the ball to Ben Thornley on the left of the Vale area but another good low save from Delaney prevented any chance of a goal.

The Valiants almost caught Blackpool on the back foot three minutes later when Marc Bridge-Wilkinson's corner from the left found the head of Stephen Brooker who climbed above any defensive challenge to power the ball towards goal but unfortunately for Vale it cannoned back off the crossbar.

After having the majority of the play in the early stages the Tangerines stepped off the gas towards the end of the half to allow Port Vale to get back into the game.

Against the run of play in the first half Blackpool conceded a penalty when Adrian Littlejohn was brought down on the edge of the area by Colin Hendry.

Bridge-Wilkinson stepped up to dispatch the spot-kick calmly into Phil Barnes' bottom left-hand corner in the 49th minute.

Steve McMahon tried two late substitutions to boost his side's attack but to no avail and with the dismissal of Hendry in stoppage time, Blackpool's dreadful afternoon was complete.

McMahon was upset at the treatment given to his players by the referee saying after the match: "With no points it's a miserable day.

"We succumbed to a referee who was totally inept. We had a bagful of chances in the week and a bagful today and we haven't taken them. We just slipped into cruise control."
