Port Vale finished the season in style with a quickfire second-half double to lift the spirits after a season which promised plenty, spluttered into mid-table mediocrity.

Akpo Sodje and Luke Rodgers were both on target as the Valiants managed to conclude the campaign in prolific fashion as the Cherries went out with a whimper.

The Potteries' club's second-half brace made it ten goals in four games to earn a 12th spot finish despite the visitors hitting back with a Luke Summerfield consolation strike.

Without the threat of relegation nor the bate of promotion hanging over Vale Park something of a non-event was beginning to unfold before the paltry flock who'd shown their faces.

It took 44 minutes before any meaningful aim was taken, but despite the lack of any preceding threat on his goal Joe Anyon proved his mind wasn't yet on a Majorca beach.

The Vale keeper, concluding an impressive debut season, pulled off an outstanding double stop a minute before the break - palming wide from Steve Fletcher after beating back James Hayter's effort.

And the visitors continued their late flurry deep into first-half injury-time and were it not for the youngster between sticks they would haven taken the lead into the break.

The Cherries' man-mountain target-man Fletcher nodded on for Darren Anderton who pumped a fierce effort at Anyon, who showed a composed presence to gather the danger.

Not satisfied with his heroics from the goal-line the Vale keeper turned playmaker to get Sodje in on goal as the hosts snatched the lead with the second half only seven minutes old.

The youngster's long punt had Josh Gowling flummoxed, leaving Sodje to nip in behind the increasingly unstable travelling back-line to jab in his 16th of the season.

And the rocky rearguard allowed Vale another free passage into the danger-zone on the 57th minute as Rodgers helped the hosts to a second which came his way with some ease.

The hustling front-runner effortlessly navigated a way through a packed box before smashing a low drive past Gareth Stewart's flailing frame to complete a clinical five minutes.

Bournemouth did manage to pull one back late on when Summerfield fired back his blocked shot to deny Anyon a deserved clean sheet with only 11 minutes remaining.

But ultimately it was too little too late as the Cherries' sixth winless outing condemned them to a final position only two places above the relegation zone.
