There's something in the water down at Vale Park and with the unbeaten home run still going strong after a 1-1 draw at the weekend, Brian Horton is working to show that the impressive start to the season is no flash in the pan.

Stephen McPhee was firing on all cylinders right from the first whistle and after having a volley zoom over in the opening stages, he found the target after 12 minutes when Billy Paynter's deft flick allowed him to run at the defence and fire an unstoppable shot that clipped Mark Tyler's right post before nestling in the back of the net.

Peterborough had their fair share of chances but their finishing let them down, especially when Adam Newton found himself in acres of space ten yards out but blasted his effort sky high.

The opening of the second half was more even however the Valiants got lively again when star man McPhee raced through under pressure from ex-Vale player Sagi Burton to hit a shot from the left of the area that forced a solid stop from Tyler.

Ian Armstrong narrowly missed when his header bounced back off the crossbar but he turned provider seconds later after he got to the byline and crossed for McPhee to thump into the roof of the net from six yards.

Vale added a third in the dying moments when Sam Collins headed Mark Boyd's corner into the bottom right of Tyler's goal.

Afterwards a delighted Horton said: "They made us work hard for the win they played some good football out there and I think Barry (Fry) will be gutted that he lost 3-0, but I'm happy with a clean sheet.

"McPhee's on fire at the moment and he is full of confidence. To be at the end of September and on 23 points is brilliant."
