Jimmy Kelly scored a dream 89th minute goal to put Scarborough into the second round of the LDV Vans Trophy at the expense of second division high fliers Port Vale.

Vale had the better of the chances in the early stages with Steve McPhee and Adrian Littlejohn both going close before McPhee opened the scoring by lifting the ball over Scarborough keeper Leigh Walker in the 29th minute.

The Seadogs gradually gained confidence thanks to Wayne Gill who was unlucky not to equalise immediately after the restart, and Kelly who twice went close.

Clint Marcelle went inches wide from a well-placed centre by Chris Senior as Scarborough battled hard to get back into the game.

Littlejohn had a brilliant shot superbly saved by Walker, then two minutes later side-footed the ball wide from just two yards, missing a golden chance to increase's Vale's lead.

Scarborough got back into the game in the 77th minute Gill's pass was flicked on by striker Lloyd Blackman and Senior nipped in to put the ball into the back of the net.

Tension mounted as play swung from end-to-end and Senior almost found the winner in the 86th minute when his shot was finger-tipped round the post.

Kelly then became the hero when after taking a corner he ran into the crowded goalmouth and fired the ball into the right hand corner of the net.

Seconds later Billy Paynter hit the bar with a header as Vale struggled in vain to take the game into extra time.
