Vale in trouble for being 'weak'

Port Vale could receive a fine for fielding a weakened side against League One high-flyers Carlisle United.

The rule apparently says that teams are obliged to play at least 6 of the players with the most appearances in their respective positions (for the season to date) or face a fine.

However, it could be argued that Johnstones are unclear about their rules. For example, if you try to view the rules on the Johnstone's Paint Trophy website, all you get is a message reading:

"The rules of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy: Coming soon. Please come back soon to read the rules of the competition."

Vale's supposed weakened team had been 2-0 up after about an hour. Oliver Norwood headed an own goal before the break, with Marc Richards showing him how to do it properly on 64 minutes.

But James Chester also used his nut to pull one back on 76 minutes, before Jason Price used his feet to equalise on 81.

Vale immediately took the lead in the penalties when Craig Curran's was saved by Vale keeper Chris Martin. But Vale's Tommy Fraser and Louis Dodds didn't hold their nerve and their kicks were also saved.

And Vale were out.
