The second division was turned on its head for 90 amazing minutes at the JJB Stadium this afternoon.

Bottom of the table Port Vale, without a point in their first four games , were given little chance against a Wigan side boasting resounding victories in their first four outings.

But an Ian Armstong goal right on half time had the home fans shaking their heads in disbelief, although it was just what the visitors deserved after an excellent first-half performance.

Armstrong rounded off a flowing move with a curling drive past a diving John Filan to give Vale the lead but after the break, the visitors were forced into some desperate defending as the home side finally clicked in to gear.

Nathan Ellington, Andy Liddell and Scott Green were all inches away from dragging the home side level but Vale managed to hold out although they will still be wondering just how they managed it after surviving a fierce bombardment in the last ten minutes
