Vale manager Brian Horton was gracious in defeat after seeing his side knocked off top spot following a 2-1 defeat at Wrexham However, Horton was quietly seething over two crucial decisions that went against his side during the game.

The first came in the 77th minute when Mark Boyd brought down Lee Jones and Jones scored from the spot to clinch Wrexham the victory.

The second controversy raged in the 86th minute when Steve McPhee headed home a pass from Steve Brooker, but the goal was ruled out for offside much to the disgust of the Vale players and the thousands of their supporters.

"They were better than us on the day, but those two crucial decisions went against us. We got a goal start, but didn't carry it on," said Horton, who added that McPhee was definitely not offside and the penalty incident took place outside of the box.

Vale took the lead against the run of play in the 20th minute when Billy Paynter was unmarked to head past substitute Paul Whitfield.

Wrexham got back on terms in the 33rd minute when Hector Sam laid the ball through for Lee Jones to beat Dean Delaney.

Wrexham had enough chances to have won the game before the interval but were lucky after the half time whistle with, first Paynter, and then Andreas Lipa shooting wide.

In the 77th minute, Boyd brought down Jones which the Vale players claimed was outside the area, and Jones got up to take the spot kick and netted his fourth goal in four games.

In the 86th minute it looked as though Vale had grabbed a face-saver when McPhee headed past Whitfield but then came the referee's assistant had raised his offside flag to rule the effort out and left Vale to contemplate going back to the Potteries pointless.

Wrexham's manager Denis Smith said: "It was a very strong performance and although we had to hang on a bit in the second half, no-one can say we didn't deserve to win. We gave them a lot of problems."
