The Vale Steward hides from the Mass protest!...well, not really

Personally, I don't care who runs the club. I just like watching football, me. You can call me a simple soul if you like. But then I've seen hundreds of fan protests "against The Board", & I've found myself at the centre of a dozen more.

One that always sticks in the memory was at Derby County. Last day of a poor 1970s season saw the Rams just survive the drop out of the top flight. The final home game was a miserable 0-3 defeat to 'Boro, where the Derby fans began cheering for the other side. It was followed by a mass protest on the pitch to get rid of Tommy Docherty, who went within the hour. I found myself climbing over a six-foot high spiked fence to get on to the pitch with thousands of others and loads of police - this was years before Hillsborough. It was hairy to say the least.

So it's not surprising that I was a little underwhelmed by the 30-odd protesters outside the ground after the Burton game. Most of us stewards had been stood down, but I had to have a look. It seemed these "protestors" were more interested in having a scrap with the exiting Burton players, the only time the stewards had to keep the small mob at bay, than getting the Board out. After the away coach pulled off, the protestors seemed to lose interest & mainly drifted away. It's not like the old days. Mind you, it was bitterly cold.

As for the game, a real blood & guts contest, and a brilliant high-octane 2-1 win. Real value for money. At the end, despite all the hard tackles (& the Burton players getting Rico sent off) the players shook hands, and went their separate ways.

What was strange was hearing the protestors try to bate the Burton manager outside later on with dirty songs about Karen Brady. They seemed quite funny inside the ground. Outside,...

But what do I know.
