Heartbreak in Oxford, but Vale are still clear at the top

Port Vale remain 3 points clear at the top of League 2, but no thanks to their trip to Oxford. Their position has more to do with the barmy game going on at Chesterfield's new stadium, where the 2nd place team somehow came back from 1-4 and 3-5 to gain a 5-5 draw with Crewe. Weird.

In fact with Rotherham (3rd this morning) drawing 1-1 at Bury (5th), and Shrewsbury (4th) holding Torquay (6th) by the same score, Vale could have few complaints with scores elsewhere, even Accrington (8th) winning 7-4 against Gillingham.

As for playing Oxford, it was clearly a matter of Oxford taking their chances, and Vale squandering theirs. Marc and Justin Richards caused the Oxford defence no end of problems, but they just couldn't finish the job.

Eventually Oxford set the mould, scoring on the hour - Tom Craddock heading home from a long cross from the right.

Dramatically, a snap volley from 10 yards by Gareth Owen equalised for Port Vale nearly 2 minutes into injury time.

But Vale fell into the old trap of relaxing after scoring, and a minute later Craddock fired home to send the Oxford fans crazy.

It was a long drive back from Oxford.
