Port Vale made it two wins in a week when an 84th minute strike from substitute Brett Angell earned a victory over Barry Fry's Peterborough.

Angell came off the bench to replace Ian Armstrong and was on hand to slam in a loose ball after Mark Tyler could only parry an effort from Steve McPhee.

Peterborough were well on top during the first half but wasted an opportunity to take the lead when Simon Rea headed over the bar from barely a yard out.

If ever a goal scoring chance could be described a golden opportunity then that was it.

Rea had ghosted in at the far post to meet Adam Newton's cross from the byline but his stooping header from a yard out flew over the crossbar.

Vale came out brightly after the break but the game looked to be heading for stalemate until Angell's late strike.

The home side created several half chances but hardly tested Tyler in the Peterborough goal, firing wide on several occasions.

Vale boss Brian Horton said: "I thought Peterborough looked good and played some neat football. We weren't at the races in the first half.

"But when I pick up the Sunday papers they will tell us we won the game and have got another three points."

A disappointed Fry said: "We've only ourselves to blame. When you don't score goals you are always going to struggle.

"We didn't deserve to come off as losers but we have got to take it on the chin and get on with it. Only Simon Rea knows how he missed that chance, it would have been a brilliant clearance."
