Port Vale moved to the top of the Nationwide Division Two table after coming from behind to beat Colchester United.

The U's opened the scoring in the 25th minute when Craig Fagan created space out on the right of the Vale area allowing him to crack in a low shot.

Dean Delaney parried the shot right into the path of Scott McGleish who subsequently side-footed the ball home to give the visitors the lead.

The Valiants equalised in the 34th minute when Marc Bridge-Wilkinson's corner was side-footed home by Sam Collins from ten yards out.

The visitors restored their the lead when McGleish, who appeared to have controlled Andy Myers' cross with his hand, turned and finished superbly with a curved shot into Delaney's top right-hand corner.

Brian Horton's men managed to pull another goal back 13 minutes into the second half when George Pilkington hung his cross from the right for Stephen Brooker who knocked the ball down for substitute Billy Paynter to loop the ball over the recovering keeper.

In an amazing turnaround and in great style, Port Vale took the lead in the 71st minute when Paynter was played through by Michael Cummins before firing in a cross that Ian Armstrong scissor-kicked down into the keeper's right-hand corner to ignite the Vale Park atmosphere.

As if that was not enough, the Valiants decided to make the game their own when two minutes later Adrian Littlejohn crossed from the left to pick out Stephen McPhee who managed to direct the ball back towards goal with a diving header and score.

However, the U's were not finished yet and snatched a goal back three minutes before time when Wayne Andrews followed up to score after Karl Duguid had hit the post.

Vale manager Brian Horton said: "I've been top of the league many times as a player but not many as a manager but we can't get carried away.

"If you win 4-3 every week then I think everybody would be happy apart from my heart."
