Vale 2 Wycombe 1

In one of the best games of an already exciting season, Port Vale muscled past Wycombe with two goals from defender John McCombe.

McCombe, the man who saved Vale from humiliation at Dartford, got his first league goals of the season on 11 and 61 minutes.

Vale dominated at the start, when many felt they might struggle. Nikki Bull had to save from a brilliant shot on the turn from Justin Richards, as Vale lay seige to Wycombe's goal. Finally, McCombe headed home from close range to score from Marc Richard heading back across goal.

But much to the despair of manager Micky Adams, Vale sat back allowing Wycombe back in it, with Dave Winfield heading home after goallie Tomlinson slipped at a corner. 1-1.

Bull also made an amazing save to deny Marc Richards, and with chance after chance the game could have gone either way.

But man-of-the-match McCombe settled it when his looping shot skipped over the keeper and into the net.

Vale hung on confortably, and it could have been 3-1 or more by the end.

In-form Wycombe had been stopped in their tracks.
