Vale break into the record books at Macclesfield

Port Vale had NEVER started a season with FOUR straight away wins in the league...until now! History has been made.

Their previous best effort had been in 1929/30, where they had run up 3 away wins at the start of a promotion winning season, bouncing back out of the Third Division North at the first attempt. But today, that record was wiped out.

Now they have beaten Bury (1-0), Southend (3-1), Bradford (2-0) and today it was Macclesfield's turn (3-0).

The next Vale record to aim for is 5 (mid-season) league away wins on the trot, which has only ever been achieved by Vale once: in 1992/93, the season when Vale won the Autoglass Trophy but lost the play-off final to West Brom.

However, before we all get carried away, Vale's next two games are at HOME, where league form has not been so impressive (a win, a draw and a defeat). In fact, the overall start for Vale of five wins, one draw and one defeat is no better than their 2003/04 season where they finished 7th, robbed of a play-off spot on goal-difference. Then they were managed by Brian Horton and - by the end of the season - by Martin Foyle. Now it is Micky Adams in charge, and he has no intentions of letting the season slip away.

On the pitch, it was The Richards Show again. This time it was Marc Richards on the scoresheet, with Justin Richards setting him up for Vale's third goal on 87 minutes. Marc had already put Vale ahead on 30 mins with an easy finish from a clever pass from Sean Rigg. He could have had a hat-trick, but Macc's keeper Jose Veiga saved brilliantly from his goalbound header. Rigg had by now settled the tie after 70 minutes, finishing sweetly off the far post.

It's an impressive start for Port Vale, breaking records as they go. But they're not top of the league, and the season has a long way to go. Vale's overall best start to a season was (again) back in 1929 when they won 10 out of their first 11 league games. That's going to take some beating. However, Adam's strong squad will also take some beating, and they look like they might go all the way.
