Wycombe Wanderers produced back-to-back League victories for the first time this season thanks to a brace from Darren Currie in a 2-1 victory against promotion chasing Port Vale.

The visitors took the lead with a stunning strike from former Coventry hit man Steve McPhee. Michael Cummins floated in a cross and McPhee thundered in a volley from 15 yards for his 20th strike of the campaign.

In what was a dull first period, Wycombe were desperately unlucky not to level the score on 40 minutes.

Left back Chris Vinnecombe swung in a deep cross and Craig Faulconbridge rose salmon-like at the back stick, only for his header to hit the inside of the post and rebound to safety.

The hosts though, were level just two minutes later. Faulconbridge's strike partner Nathan Tyson was halted in the area by Liam Burns as he made tracks towards goal. After Burns had been booked, Currie calmly converted the spot kick.

The game opened up in the second period with both defences stretched. Chances were afforded to both sets of strikers but good goalkeeping from Vale's Jonathan Brain and Wycombe's Steve Williams kept the score at 1-1.

The home side took the lead on 75 minutes in the strangest circumstances. Currie took a free kick on the left touchline and the ball sailed into the net past a bemused Brain, without anyone getting a touch.

The hosts held onto a valuable three points despite some late scares in what is probably "too little, too late" to save them from relegation to Division Three.
